Mainstream acceptance of spoken word has taken some urban
contemporary poets from 'the page to the stage to the
studio'

In recent years, spoken word or performance poetry has
been embraced unlike ever before. From a hit Broadway play
to a television show to mainstream commercial spots for
McDonald's and others, the exposure has no question given
credence to the art form, but the struggle for financial
parity and artistic recognition continues.

“When some of my poets first started out [about a decade
ago], they were doing shows for free,” says Walter Mudu,
president of Mudu MultiMedia in Brooklyn, New York.

Dana Gilmore, one of Def Poetry hottest poets, will be air on HBO's Def Poetry Jam August 15th.

Tommy Bottoms will also appear on Def Poetry Jam on September 19th.
